Mary Jane Thomas, 71, of Red Wing, died Saturday, Aug. 18, at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park in Red Wing.

Mary Jane Thomas, 71, of Red Wing, died Saturday, Aug. 18, at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park in Red Wing.

She was born Oct. 27, 1940, in Eastman, Wis., daughter of Fritz and Tena (Bunders) Messerli. She graduated in 1958 from Prairie Du Chien, Wis. The following September, she moved to Red Wing where she began her career working for the “City Cab,” Nybo's, and the St. James Hotel. On Aug. 24, 1968, she married Richard Thomas at the Church of St. Joseph. They adopted their two sons from Catholic Social Services. She began working at the Church of St. Joseph and School as a lunch room mom, library aide, and was a religion teacher for 25 years. She was also the circle chairman of the Women's Guild and sold concessions for Red Wing High School for 5-1/2 years.

Mary spent her later years providing daycare for many, many local families. She leaves a legacy of young people whom she cared for. She enjoyed baseball, football, parades, and being active in her church, school, and Jordan Tower community. Most of all, she treasured laughing with friends and family.

Mary is survived by her two sons, Robert (Jennifer) Thomas of St. Louis Park and Tim (Annette) Thomas of Red Wing; three grandchildren, Elliot, Ella, and Vivi; five sisters, Arlene (William) Boots of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bonnie (Hubert) Prochaska of Janesville, Wis., Leila Messerli of Prairie Du Chien, Judy Messerli of Madison, Wis., and Elenor Bolt of Prairie Du Chien.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard, on Aug. 19, 1980; and two brothers, Bill and Frank.

Mass of Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas Kommers officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
