Irene Elizabeth (Lovgren) Strusz, 89, of Red Wing, went home to be with her Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 14, with her loving daughter at her side.

Irene Elizabeth (Lovgren) Strusz, 89, of Red Wing, went home to be with her Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 14, with her loving daughter at her side.

She was born March 1, 1923, in Amery, Wis., the daughter of Erick and Laura (Anderson) Lovgren. She was raised in Red Wing and graduated from Central High School in 1941. She graduated from the Teacher Training Department of Red Wing High School on May 26, 1942, and taught in Rural Goodhue District 122. In January of 1944 she married Luvern Strusz in Hay Creek. The couple farmed in Hay Creek until 1946 when they moved to Red Wing.

She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing for 66 years and a member of the Ladies Guild. In their early years, Luvern and Irene were 4-H leaders. As a former teacher, Irene enjoyed writing, reading, and compiling and organizing her family history. She also had a talent for solving crossword puzzles, sewing, and crocheting.

Irene is survived by her daughters, LuRene (Larry) Groth of rural Red Wing and Sonja (Brad) Engelke of Belmont, Wis.; sons Harry (Arlene) of Winona, Gene (Marilyn) of Appleton, Wis., and Dan (Cheryl) of Apple Valley. She was a proud and loving grandmother to 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luvern, in 2000; son Sheldon in 1958; parents; sisters, Eleanor Thompson, Louise Salmonson, and Geneva Bohmbach; and her brother, Harry Lovgren.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing, with Reverend Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and for 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials preferred to St. John's Church or School, or Lutheran Chapel of the Air.
