Donald W. Benrud, age 86, of Goodhue, died Thursday, July 12, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 16, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Goodhue with Reverend Greg Hall officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Goodhue with military honors provided by the Bellechester American Legion Post #598. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Monday 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Donald Willis Benrud was born on May 20, 1926, in Belvidere Township, Goodhue County, to Ole and Edna (nee Bollum) Benrud. He grew up on the family farm and attended District 101 country school. In 1943, he graduated from Goodhue High School. He farmed with his dad until entering the U. S. Army on April 18, 1946. He served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII and was honorably discharged on April 25, 1947. He returned to the family farm and was in the Air Force Reserve from 1947-1950. On Sept. 23, 1950, he married Nathlye E. Luebke in Wanamingo. They farmed the Benrud family farm. In 1975, Donald started a remodeling business. In 1991, he turned the farm over to the next generation, and in 2000, he retired from the remodeling business.

Donald was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school for 29 years. He was also a member of Bellechester American Legion Post #598, served as treasurer for Belvidere Township for 39 years, was chairman of the Goodhue Co. Township Officers Association for 12 years, was chairman of the Goodhue Co. Historical Society, a substitute instructor at the Red Wing YMCA, and was active in restoring Hoff Cemetery in Belvidere Township and Chandler Church in Belle Creek Township. Donald also helped many families locate old graves and cemetery records for genealogy purposes. Donald enjoyed aviation, restoring antique planes and autos, collecting antique radios and telephones, boating, swimming, roller skating, traveling, and wintering in Arizona.

Donald is survived by his wife, Nathlye; children Wanda (Willie) Carlstrom of Cannon Falls, Jerry (Vicki) Benrud of Amboy, Cindy (Greg) Ryan and Roger (Michelle) Benrud, both of Goodhue; grandchildren, Travis (Sheri) Ryan, Cassidy Post, Shamus (Ashley) Ryan, Dan (Kristi) Benrud, Krista (Richie) Ramirez, Paige (Brian) Flaherty, Emily Benrud, and Calvin Benrud; great-grandchildren, Ian Post, Lincoln Ryan, Aidan Grund-Benrud, and Hannah Ryan.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Edna; daughter Sam (Sandra) Schuster and brothers, Lester and Charles Benrud.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
