Phyllis A. Kivi-Cushing, 83, died Wednesday, June 27, at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center.
Phyllis A. Kivi-Cushing, 83, died Wednesday, June 27, at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center.
She was born July 19, 1928, in Cloquet, Minn., to Emil and Caroline (Ness) Karppinen. Phyllis attended her schooling in Duluth, Minn. On Sept. 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Roy Kivi. The couple made their home in Duluth and various places before coming to Red Wing. Phyllis worked as a nurse's aid at several nursing homes and also worked at Jostens and Red Wing Shoe Company. Roy died on Aug. 14, 1983. On Dec. 31, 1986, Phyllis married Louis Cushing. In 1989, she retired from Red Wing Shoe Company. Louis died April 13, 2011.
Phyllis enjoyed traveling, crocheting, craftwork, and beadwork, and was fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. She was a member of St. John's and a past member of Sons of Norway.
She is survived by children Marilyn (Gerald) Rankila of Annandale, Jan (Bill) Langhans of Red Wing, Rodger (Sharry) Kivi of Hudson, Wis., Roy Kivi Jr. of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Leanne (Robert) Lind of Duluth, and Randy Kivi of New Prague; son-in-law Scott Gusa of Sturgeon Lake; 15 grandchildren: Robin (Bob) Branstsner, Lisa Burton, Marcy (Robbe) Fischer, Angie and Jen Kivi, Dan (Christa) and Kelly (Bobbi) Langhans, Jason (Amy) and Jesse (Bianca) and Jamie Lind, Mike Pavelko, Ryan and Nicholas Kivi, and Tawnya Osorio and Andrea Gilles; great-grandchildren, Lexis, Brook, Jeremy, Nick, Kasi, Dylan, Gracie, Andrew, William, Samantha, Jana, Andrew, Alicia, Tyler, Elijah, Bella, Haley, Kyler, Nolan, and Owen; sisters, Jean Lowe of Roseville, Iris (Terry) Ollenberger of Lacy, Wash., Faye (Jim) Olson of Ottumwa, Iowa, Carole Swenson of Duluth; three stepchildren, Brad (Sue) Cushing, Randi (Mark) Hinds of Richardson, Texas, Clayton Cushing of Trijillo, Peru; and numerous nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; a daughter, Karen Gusa; and a grandson, George.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 2, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Reverend Loren Lucht officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be for 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or the church.
