June Athena Zych, 88, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, June 26, at Deer Crest Assisted Living in Red Wing.

June Athena Zych, 88, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, June 26, at Deer Crest Assisted Living in Red Wing.

June was born June 11, 1924, in Gallup, N.M., to Y. G. Polos and Irene Horner Polos. She was brought up in New Mexico and became a "Harvey Girl" at age 16 and was assigned to Barstow, Calif. There she met and soon married Frank Zych. After the war, they moved to Santa Fe with their son, Frank, and where their daughter, Charlot, was born. The family returned to California where they would remain for more than 40 years. They later retired to Spearfish, S.D., where her husband preceded her in death in 1997.

June enjoyed being a homemaker, bringing creativity, freshness, and hospitality to friends and family.

She leaves behind her son, Frank, and his wife, Linda; her daughter, Charlot, and her husband, Mike Hayes; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at the First Covenant Church in Red Wing with Reverend Timothy Anderson officiating.
