Luverne William Holm, 94, died Saturday, June 23, at the Red Wing Health Center.
Luverne William Holm, 94, died Saturday, June 23, at the Red Wing Health Center.
He was born on Jan. 8, 1918, in Vasa Township, Goodhue County, Minn., to Victor and Esther (Peterson) Holm. He began his schooling at country school in Vasa Township until 1929, then moved to South Bend, Ind., and in 1932, he and his family moved to Red Wing, Minn., where he graduated from Red Wing High School in 1936. He continued his education at Mankato Commercial College and received his degree in 1938. He then worked at Holm's Café until 1941. On Sept. 14, 1940, Luverne was united in marriage to Norma Marie Larson in Red Wing. For a couple years they owned and operated Gypsy Trail Restaurant. He then served the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 until 1946 during World War II. Following his discharge he began working at the American Rock Wool Corporation. In 1951, he left his position and the couple moved to California where he started his career as an accountant at General Dynamics Corporation in San Diego. He worked as an accountant for the next 30 years until he retired in 1980, and in 1983, they moved back to Red Wing where they enjoyed their retirement. Norma died on Feb. 4, 1991.
Luverne was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and a life member of the Leo C. Peterson Post No. 54 American Legion of Red Wing. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching sports.
He is survived by one sister, Rose Henrickson of Red Wing,and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, and his parents.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Reverend Howard Stenerson and Reverend Jack Nordgaard will be officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at the funeral home, and 1 hour prior to the service.
