Roger William Smith of Red Wing, age 72, passed into the light, on June 10, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with colon cancer.

Roger William Smith of Red Wing, age 72, passed into the light, on June 10, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with colon cancer.

Born June 6, 1940, to Verl and Marjorie Smith and attended Red Wing schools. On June 17, 1961, he married Joyce Malon in Red Wing where he resided his entire life.

He was a member of the Local 49ers Heavy Equipment Operators Union. He operated the tower crane for construction of some of the tallest buildings in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Rochester areas. He was a member of the Black Hills Sportsman's Club, Frontenac Sportsman's Club, and the United Lutheran Church.

Roger enjoyed hunting, fishing, restoration of vintage cars, gardening, canning, horseback riding, and spending time at the family cabin. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Roger is survived by his wife Joyce; son Randy (Jen Jay); grandchildren, Maddi, Gabby, Elli, and Logan; sister-in-law and her spouse, Carol and Jack Stevenson; sister-in-law Marlene Malon of Manteca, Calif.; niece Elizabeth Millard, (Karla Pankow); and nephew Chris (Emily) Millard; brothers Curt (Nancy), Everett (Carolyn), Lee (Cheryl), Kenny (Shelly), and Kevin (Amy) Smith; sisters Nyra Banitt, Tootsie (Dave) Hinck, Jeanelle Fosberg, Bev (Jim) Radel, Barb (Ron) Gernentz, Kathy Gronquist, and sister-in-law Kelly Smith; several nieces and nephews; step-brothers and step-sisters, James (Doc) Holden, Jr., Glenn, Pinky (Linda), and Betty Holden, LaVonne (Paul) Jennings, Bubby (Dennis) Johnson, and Marvel Holden.

Roger was preceded in death by sons, Jamie Lee Smith, and Jamie William Smith; father, Verl Smith; mother, Marjorie Holden; brothers Burton, Lyle "Red", and Jerrol "Popper" Smith; step-father James Holden, Sr.; and step-brother Sam Holden; step-sisters Tottie Hase, Pat Albrecht, and Irene Albrecht.

He will be sadly missed by his family and all of the wonderful friends he had during his lifetime.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 22, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the United Lutheran Church in Red Wing.

Joyce and Family, We are so saddened for your loss. We will always remember Roger. He always had a smile. Moving in the neighborhood, when Jason was old enough, coming down and mowing and shoveling snow for you. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Nancy and Kevin Dodge and Families
