Velma Mary Scharr, age 94, of Red Wing, died Sunday, May 27, at the Fairview Red Wing Medical Center.

Velma Mary Scharr, age 94, of Red Wing, died Sunday, May 27, at the Fairview Red Wing Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Alma Township in Buffalo County, Wis., the daughter of Alfred and Vilona (Saxe) Zittel. Velma was raised by her grandmother. She attended schools in Mondovi, Wis., and in Wessington and Rapid City, S.D. On April 17, 1937, she married Raymond Scharr in Decorah, Iowa. They lived in Alma, Wis., before moving to Red Wing in 1938. She worked at Maid Rite, Ness Hotel and Café, Hughes Shoes, and Marge’s Nutrition Square.

She was a member of the Church of St. Joseph. She enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois (Ed) Krause of Red Wing and Janet (Roger) Hand of Red Wing; nine grandchildren, Scott (Heidi) Krause, Lisa (Mark) Stehr, Steven (Teresa) Krause, Thomas (Angela Barnes) Krause, Mike (Sandy) Scharr, Kathy (Marlin) Irons, Mary (Chris) Chesney, Kristin Scharr and Tracy (Kurt) Henn; 21 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Anthony (Marge) Zittel of Winona and Alfred (Marvella) Zittel of Alma, Wis.; and one daughter-in-law, Margaret Scharr of Minnetonka.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; one son, James; three brothers, Wilbur, Elton, and David Zittel; five sisters, Wilma Stearn, Margery Clemenson, Irma Jean Larson, Isabell Stuber, and Betty Kay Zittel; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan Krause and Kari Krause.

Mass of Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Burial will be Calvary Cemetery. Urn bearers will be grandchildren. Visitation will be for 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
