Gertrude Ann "Trudy" Sutherland, 71, Red Wing, died at her residence on Monday, May 21.

Gertrude Ann "Trudy" Sutherland, 71, Red Wing, died at her residence on Monday, May 21.

She was born June 23, 1940, in Red Wing, the daughter of James and Avis (Pickett) Sloper. She attended Red Wing Central High School. She married Richard Sutherland on July 1, 1960, in St. James, Minn., and they lived in Red Wing. She worked as a waitress most of her life at Liberty’s Restaurant, Bev’s Café, and at Treasure Island. She also did daycare when her children were young.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, she enjoyed writing poetry, and she loved her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Richard; her sons, Scott (Bonnie) Sutherland of St. Croix Falls, Wis., Jon (Anita) Sutherland of Hastings, and Troy (Angie) Sutherland of Red Wing; one daughter, Maureen (Joe) Trygstad of Kasson, Minn.; two stepsons, Ricky (Arlene) Sutherland of The Villages, Fla., and Gary (Sandy) Sutherland of Rice Lake, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cathy O’Brien of Newton, Okla., and Helen Vogt of Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bing Carlon; and one sister, Marilyn Rother.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Reverend Lynne Rigg and Eugene Hasselquist officiating. Burial will be in Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and on Friday for 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
