Ruth Elizabeth Jones, 89, a longtime University of Minnesota professor, died March 21, in St. Paul.
Ruth Elizabeth Jones, 89, a longtime University of Minnesota professor, died March 21, in St. Paul.
She was born Feb. 12, 1923, in Red Wing, to William Albert Jones and Emma Elizabeth (Cook) Jones. She was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, earning undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees. She was a Modern Languages Professor with an emphasis on Spanish literature, and an expert on the Spanish author, Cervantes.
Before finishing her doctorate she traveled extensively throughout Central and South Americas, and lived in Caracas, Venezuela; Mexico City, Mexico; and Havana, Cuba, where she lived until Fidel Castro came to power. She taught for two years at the University of Arkansas before joining the Minnesota faculty. She took sabbaticals in Spain and continued to travel after her retirement to the South Pacific, Europe, South America, and Asia.
She was a generous supporter of the arts, historical societies, and charitable causes, particularly those in the Twin Cities and Red Wing areas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Melpia Marion Jones and Katahryn Ellen Mullen.
She is survived by two nephews, Thomas W. Mullen and Michael J. Mullen of Brandon, Miss.; special caregivers and friends, Cheryl Nelson and Marty Spangler; and longtime friends, Judy and Gene Bennett.
Graveside ceremonies will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 26.
