Stanley Lindholm, 85

Stanley Norman Lindholm, age 85, formerly of Vasa and Goodhue, died following a brief illness, on Thursday morning, March 22, at the Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing, where he has been residing the past two years.

Stanley was born at home, in Leon Township, on Dec. 21, 1926, the son of Fred T. and Ruth (Nelson) Lindholm. He attended Wastedo District #47 through the 8th grade, and went on to Cannon Falls High School. Due to the war effort, Stanley went to San Diego to work with the Boeing Industry. He returned home to join the U.S. Navy. In doing so, he completed his high school education, and was also trained in radar and gunfire control. He served on the USS Kearsarge, as one of the first commissioned crew members, from Dec. 15, 1944, until his honorable discharge on July 10, 1946. He was a proud plank holder all of his life!

He attended the Minnesota Bible College for a year in 1948. He married Muriel Mae Skog, on June 2, 1949, at her parent's farm. They lived in Welch and Vasa, prior to moving to Goodhue, in 1985. He was an active member of the Church of Christ in Cannon Falls.

Following his naval discharge, he worked at Duncan Electric in Cannon Falls, the Red Wing Tannery, and was self-employed for many years in excavating. He later was a heavy equipment operator (back hoe) for Charlson Excavating in Red Wing, and retired from Holm Brothers Construction in 2003.

He enjoyed hunting in Wyoming, Montana and Minnesota, fishing, and moose hunting in Canada. He loved music, red canoes, auto racing, fireworks, making maple syrup, camping and blueberry picking on Echo Trail, woodworking, cutting firewood, Lindholm reunions, and traveling with his wife. He missed her terribly when she died on July 25, 2003.

On May 15, 2010 Stanley was one of the WWII veterans that was fortunate to go on an "honor flight" to the Memorial in Washington, District of Columbia.

Stanley will be remembered most for his love of family, his sense of humor, and his love of spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 54 years, Muriel; and brothers, Arthur and Benneth Lindholm.

He is survived by his children, Rebecca (Jim) Goodwin of Cannon Falls, Randall (Geri) Lindholm of Vasa and Ronald (Joanne) Lindholm of White Rock; 8 grandchildren, Jeremy, Ryan, Marne, Melissa (Chris), Jill (Jason), Mitch (Jessica), Nate and Jon; 10 great-grandchildren, Lucas, Justin, Heather, Lily, Riley, Corey, Josie, Jayla, Carter and Mallory; sisters, Marie Bengtson of Red Wing, Ann Hall of Frontenac, and Jule Johnson of Vasa; brother Frank Lindholm of Bloomington; brother-in-law, Earl Lellman of Forest Lake; sister-in-law, Verlaine Skog of Cannon Falls; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 29, with a military honors farewell at 6:45 p.m., at Riverwood Community Church, 5343 Hwy 19 Blvd., Cannon Falls. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m., with Pastor Dan Feldkamp, Pastor Paul Paurus and Pastor Ken Larson officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Memorials are preferred to the Cannon Falls Veterans Memorial or Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing.
