Avis E. Syverson, 90, of Wanamingo, died Wednesday, March 7, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Avis E. Syverson, 90, of Wanamingo, died Wednesday, March 7, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1921, in rural Zumbrota, to John August and Harriet (Rice) Nelson. She was baptized at the Congregational Church in Zumbrota and confirmed by Reverend Ingolf Kronstad at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo. She graduated from Zumbrota High School and attended Winona State College. On Jan. 24, 1942, she married Marvin Syverson at the Congregational Church.
Avis was a member and was active at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was interested in quilting, WELCA, and Bible studies. She was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.
Avis is survived by her daughter, Carole (Warren) Fandrey; sons, Jon (Tammy) Syverson, James (Renae) Syverson, Jay (Marilyn) Syverson; grandchildren, Chris Fandrey, Ryan (Ann) Fandrey, Julie (Ted) Galaty, Jill (Jesse) Marzean, Aaron Syverson, Brent Syverson, Kaila Syverson, Carolyn Syverson, Derek Syverson; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Amelia Fandrey, Spero and Tolemie Galaty, Emma and Jonathan Marzean.
Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; and brother, Kenneth Nelson.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Reverend Christopher Culuris officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Mahn Family Funeral Home-Larson Chapel and for 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to local food shelves.
