Red Wing suffered its first Missota Conference loss in years last week, putting its streak of seven straight titles in jeopardy with just two conference meets left. The Wingers responded like champions Monday at Mississippi National Golf Links.
Senior Brittany Herzog secured medalist honors at 82 to lead the Wingers to a six-stroke victory over Northfield, who entered the meet tied atop the Missota standings. Red Wing's score of 342 was its lowest of the year.
"I thought we played pretty well," Red Wing coach Mark Herzog said. "I was really happy. We got a good, low 80s score and the rest were under 90."
Rachel Oeltjen carded an 85 on the heels of a career-low 84 last week, while Ashley Brooks and Katie Kesti tallied career-lows at 87 and 88, respectively.
"Those are things you look for," coach Herzog said. "Girls are getting better and continuing to make progress."
Hope Sevlie settled for an 88 after posting a 41 on the front side, while Danielle Brooks rounded out the lineup at 90.
The Winger win sets the stage for a dramatic Missota Conference Championships Monday at Stonebrooke Golf Club. Red Wing currently leads the race by one, but points are doubled at the meet.
"We'll see if we can make it eight or go back to runner-up," coach Herzog said.
Prior to that showdown, the Wingers will play host Wednesday to an impressive field at their invitational. Minnewaska and Burnsville lead the way as the defending Class A and Class AA champs. Players will tee off at 12:30 p.m.
