Mary Ann Scharpen, age 78, of Wanamingo, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, in Red Wing.

Mary Ann Scharpen, age 78, of Wanamingo, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, in Red Wing.

She was born on Nov. 2, 1934, the last child born on her grandparent's family farm in rural Wanamingo. Mary Ann was the daughter of Peter and Minnie (Satren) Solberg. She graduated from Wanamingo High School. On July 25, 1953, she married Duane Scharpen in Wanamingo. Mary Ann spent over 30 years working at Dr. Walter's office and Olmsted Medical Center.

Mary Ann was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the church choir, and was involved in Bridge Club, Red Hat Club, and Card Club. Mary Ann enjoyed life and lived life to the fullest. Her main focus and brightest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will greatly miss Nana.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband of over 59 years, Duane; daughter, Rita (Allan) Radke; son, Brad Scharpen; grandchildren, Liza (Chad) Griggs, Jordan Radke, Candi (Derek) Stern, Jake Scharpen; great-grandchildren, Mason Griggs, Levi Stern; sisters, Dolores Steege, Pat Opfer; brothers Don (Gertrude) Solberg and Merrill (Becky) Solberg.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; brother Gary Solberg, brothers-in-law, Lloyd Steege, Dave Opfer, and Don Scharpen.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Burial will be on July 25, in memory of the couple's 60th wedding anniversary, in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and for 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
