Red Wing City Council briefs

From the meeting of March 11, 2013.

City streets to close for summer race

Red Wing City Council on Monday approved a private use of public property request to close parts of West Sixth and West Fourth streets for a one-mile run/walk organized by Red Wing Shoes and the YMCA Thursday June 20.

The race will feature waves of participants, from serious competitors to fun-runs while wearing a pair of Red Wing Shoes work boots.

“We want to celebrate summer and all the activities available in the Red Wing Area,” said Dave Anderson from the Red Wing Family YMCA. “We want to hopefully encourage area residents to become more active and live a healthier lifestyle.”

Proceeds will go to the YMCA annual fund used to provide financial assistance to people who are unable to afford membership.

March 11 declared Winger Girls Hockey Day

Mayor Dennis Egan proclaimed March 11, 2013, as Red Wing Winger Girls Hockey Day following a remarkable season that included winning the section 1A championship in February.

The Winger girls hockey team was in attendance at the Council meeting to receive the honor. The team presented Egan with a team T-shirt.

“I will wear it with pride,” Egan said.

Meeting watch

Monday’s City Council meeting lasted about two hours and 45 minutes, including a closed session where members discussed a purchase offer for Spring Creek Avenue North. Council President Lisa Bayley and Council Member Dean Hove were not in attendance.
