My father, George Hulstrand Sr., grew up in Leon Township, Goodhue County, and Spring Garden Lutheran Church.
As a child, we used to come down at least four times a year from Willmar to visit relatives. I always marveled at how beautiful the area was.
Since then, I have had a chance to visit 29 countries and 47 states. Even now I marvel at the beauty of southeastern Minnesota.
Do you really want to destroy a unique area to mine silica sand?
My experience with mining areas is that once the area has been mined, the mining companies leave forever, and they could care less how they leave an area.
I used to live in England, and I remember the big mining tips the companies left that still scarred the land decades and hundreds of years after they had finished mining.
There will be some individuals who will do tremendously well economically. That is a given.
The more important question is: What will be left for everyone else, including future generations? I am just asking the question, one who has always loved Goodhue County, Minnesota.
George Hulstrand Jr.
Willmar, Minn.
