The Food and Drug Administration is renewing its warning to pet owners that some dog treats made in China can make animals sick.
The FDA recently expanded its warning about Chinese-made jerky treats to include duck and sweet potato products as well as chicken. Pet illnesses, mainly in dogs but affecting cats as well, have been reported in all 50 states and parts of Canada.
The primary symptoms in animals affected by the treats include vomiting, diarrhea, frequent urination and severe thirst. Pet owners should contact a veterinarian if they think their animal could be sick.
The treats cannot be recalled because the FDA has not yet determined a specific cause of the illness.
