The Red Wing Police Department is asking for the public’s help in finding a handgun that was accidentally thrown into a recycling bin at Goodhue County Recycling Center, 3745 W. Highway 61.
Dane Murphy, Red Wing, said he was dropping off recyclables at about 3 p.m. Feb. 21 and later realized that the gun had somehow gotten mixed in. When he returned and went through the bags of recycling he had dropped off, Murphy said the gun was missing.
The gun is a .45 caliber stainless steel compact Colt Defender with a serial number of DR45062. The gun is valued at about $1,000.
Police Chief Roger Pohlman said the gun may be turned in at the Law Enforcement Center, 430 West Sixth St., with no questions asked.
“However, attempts to sell, pawn, trade or possess the gun in the future, would result in potential criminal prosecution,” Pohlman said in a press release.
Arrangements to turn the gun into police may be made by contacting 651-385-3155.
