Sunnyside School

Walking Wednesday

On Feb. 20, 12 students participated in the Sunnyside Sneaker program. The winner was Kendra Carlisle from Mrs. O’Leary’s first-grade classroom.

Jump Rope for Heart assembly

An assembly is planned at 10:15 a.m. Friday March 1 in the large gym for students and staff.

Burnside School

Tower View Robots

On March 7, 8 and 9, the Tower View ALC robotics team will be taking their robot to Duluth for the statewide competition. This year’s challenge requires each team to build a robot that shoots Frisbees through a goal at various heights. Each team’s robot is controlled and operated by students.

The “Bot Squad” began building a robot in the middle of December and finished up Feb. 19. The members have used the Burnside gym as a practice facility to hone their driving and shooting skills. After the competition, the Bot Squad will return to Burnside to present the process of building the robot, share how they fared at the competition and demonstrate the robot.

St. John's School

No school

There will be no school Monday Feb. 25.

Lenten service

Grades 3-5 are going to sing at 7 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 27 for the Lenten Service.

Pepfest

The end-of-the-year game and awards night will 6:30 p.m. March 1 at Sunnyside.

Adventures in Learning Preschool

3-4 year olds

The students had several visitors this week. Dr. Nancy Bremseth taught the students dental health. They learned the correct way to brush with the help of "Al the alligator" and worked together to graph which foods and beverages are good or bad for teeth.

Cale and Dempsey's moms later came in for game day. Our final visitor was Nevaeh's mom. She was our guest reader when we checked out books in the church library.

4-5-year-olds

Mason's parents were guest readers. Dental health was the theme for the week with a visit to Dr. Nancy Bremseth's office. The students know how to brush and floss their teeth, how many times to go to the dentist and which foods are healthier for their teeth. They brushed the plaque off of "teeth" and will begin an experiment to show what certain drinks do to their teeth.

Colvill School

Colvill Kids 3’s

Reading

Miss Katie’s classes will be reading “It Looked Like Spilt Milk” by Charles Shaw. They will review shapes and play the shape game. Children will practice object counting and counting to 10. They will guess what is in the surprise bag. Their vocabulary words are “owl, squirrel, cloud, spill, flower and birthday cake.”

Colvill Kids Mixed Ages

Ms. Lila’s classes will be talking about feelings. Children will read “My Many Colored Days” by Dr. Seuss. They will be coloring themselves and telling how they feel; this will become a new class book. Children will observe how colors change when you add a new color to it.

Colvill Kids 4’s

Miss Catie’s classes are reading “Totem Tale: A Tall Story From Alaska” by Deb Vanasse. They are learning the letter "Kk" with Keely Kangaroo. Children are making their own totem poles as they learn about them.

Colvill Kids and ECFE will not have class Monday Feb. 25. Head Start will be in session.

Discovery Preschool Room

Dental Health is our theme this week. Children explored all the things in the bathroom that help take care of their teeth.

They painted with dental floss and learned why people floss their teeth. In the science center, children applied soda, sugar and juice to egg shells to see what happened can happen to teeth. As children start to choose what they eat, this experiment will help them understand what the effects those foods can have on their teeth.

The second step teaching this week is working on solutions. Children pledged to be problem solvers and prevent cavities by brushing their teeth.

Kindergarten Readiness

Dental hygiene was our theme as children looked at their tongue and gums. Playing drop the tooth brush in the bottle got the children to be more aware. Looking in mirrors and counting teeth was a surprise for the children as not everyone had the same amount. The children saw pictures of adult and baby teeth and talked about the tooth fairy. Painting yellow teeth with white tooth paste was a fun activity. The letter “Qq” was talked about and practiced on the writing tablets.

Preschool 1

Children Karmen’s 2-year-old room learned some new things about presidents this week. In our group activity, we talked about what the White House is and about our American flag. We also talked about Obama, Washington and Lincoln. We used our Lincoln logs and tried to build the White House. Art projects consisted of paper plate art, making our own White House, making flags and also making letter Jj art.

Dental health

The 3-year-olds and children in the Jumpstart Room learned about Dental Health this week.

Teeth

Mary Ann’s children had fun reading many books, and also practicing brushing their teeth this week. They constructed a dentist office out of construction blocks, looked at teeth models and pretended to be at a dentist office during their dramatic play time.

Laurie's Jumpstart Team

The Jumpstart Team made great models of their teeth on a paper plate. They used pink play dough and white beans! They also read many books on why teeth are important, how to keep them healthy and what they would like to ask the tooth fairy. It was fun to see them practicing on flossing and counting teeth. Katie Acker taught the children about good dental hygiene. It was a good learning experience for all.
