Ellsworth head coach Rich Powers liked the intensity and grit displayed by his team against Baldwin-Woodville Friday evening. However, that could not offset the Panthers’ problems with turnovers, along with the Blackhawks’ size and outside shooting ability as B-W pulled away with a 53-42 victory.
Ellsworth (5-16, 2-12 Middle Border) trailed 27-20 to start the second half and was able come close to the Blackhawks, trailing 27-25 in the third quarter and 36-33 and 39-35 early in the fourth. But B-W dominated the rest of the ballgame, going on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter.
Ellsworth’s top scorer was Alex Campbell with 12 points. Chrystian Kulow finished with 10 points and Nick Taranto had seven points.
The Panthers lost eight of their last nine games to end the regular season. Ellsworth opens WIAA regional tournament play at West Salem Tuesday.
