Letter: Mayor should step down

To the Editor:

Mayor Egan, with all due respect, please do the right thing and resign as mayor.

Regardless of whether or not a statutory conflict of interest is involved in your situation, your effectiveness and credibility have been severely, if not irreparably, compromised.

Red Wing citizens have lost confidence in you and respect for you, to the extent that a recall petition is being launched; the City Council has been placed in an unenviable and exceedingly difficult position; hours of council and city staff time have already been expended on this matter, with the prospect of many more hours to come; scarce city revenue now has to be spent on the council-mandated investigation; and city board and commissions (on one of which I serve) have been urged to consider a vote of no confidence in you.

The perception that there is a taint of something decidedly underhanded in this matter is fiercely corrosive of civic underpinnings.

Ethical tone deafness on your part? Time and the city’s investigations will tell.

I urge you to open your ears to the avalanche of very serious concerns voiced by City Council members and citizens. Please resign immediately.
