Snow Week features ‘Hunger Games’ theme

Red Wing High School will use themes from “The Hunger Games” book and movie series to celebrate Snow Week this year.

Red Wing High School will use themes from “The Hunger Games” book and movie series to celebrate Snow Week this year.

Snow Week is a “little break-up to have some fun and not disrupt the school day,” Red Wing High School Principal Beth Borgen said. Activities include dress-up days, snow flake-cutting contests and dances, among other things.

The Student Council chose “The Hunger Games” theme after a general theme of raising awareness of hunger in schools was adopted on the state level of student councils.

Borgen said their thinking was, “Let’s just make that our focus for the year, because it’s so prevalent for so many of our kids, unfortunately.”

The plot line of “The Hunger Games” ties into the themes of genuine hunger by giving students opportunities to bring in canned goods for the Red Wing High School food shelf — which opened this school year — but also a theme of romance to highlight Valentine’s Day, which falls on Thursday.

Other activities that the week will include sporting events, a band concert, a showing of “The Hunger Games” and a pep fest.
