Boys Basketball: Cougars win on back-to-back days

Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Kevin Niebuhr followed up a big game Friday night with another stellar performance Saturday as the Cougars defeated Pine Island 59-33 in Pine Island.

Niebuhr finished with a game-high 22 points and 15 rebounds one night after scoring 27 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in Z-M’s 74-50 win over Cannon Falls.

The Cougars (12-8, 8-2 HVL Blue) shot 42 percent from the field in Saturday’s win and held a 36-22 rebounding advantage, including 14 offensive rebounds. Nathaniel Rauen was the only other player to score in double figures with 13 points. He also had six rebounds, two assists, one block and four steals.

The Panthers were led by Ben Warneke, who had nine points and four rebounds. Alex Traut contributed six points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the loss.

Z-M, second in the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division, will host HVL Blue-leading Lake City Tuesday in Zumbrota.
