Feb. 8, 1863

Upon hearing of the death of Hon. Wm. H. Welch, Company F of the Sixth Regiment held a special meeting while camped at Glencoe. A resolution was adopted stating that as members of the regiment, while learning with deep regret and heartfelt sorrow of the death of one of our highly respected citizens, it is resolved that in his death, the State of Minnesota, and especially the city of Red Wing, has suffered an irreparable loss, and that the bereaved friends and family have the earnest and heartfelt sympathy of the whole company.

J.F. Finch, surgeon of the 7th Regiment, sends his most sincere thanks to the ladies of the Soldiers Aid Society in Red Wing on behalf of the sick and suffering soldiers for the box of hospital stores sent to them. The box contained 10 pillows, three dressing gowns, six pair slippers, 10 rolls bandages, one paper dried fruit, four cans fruit, two towels, one bottle catsup, two pillow cases, two comforters and five shirts.

Until last Saturday night there was nothing to indicate any change from the mild winter weather thus far. By Sunday morning however, the north wind began howling, and the thermometer fell down into the single digits. Since then it has continued steadily cold, and it is felt possible the region could expect winter weather to last into the early spring.
