The Goodhue County Historical Society has rescheduled its annual meeting and Holden Township exhibit open house, which were postponed due to icy road conditions. These events will now take place at 2 p.m. Sunday Feb. 10 at the Goodhue County History Center.
Following a short business meeting, Jeff Sauve will present “Muus vs. Muus: Holden in the Limelight.” He is St. Olaf College’s Norwegian-American Historical Association archivist.
In Holden Township in the early 1880s, the Rev. B.J. Muus and wife Oline fought bitterly in court over her inheritance. Ultimately, Norwegian playwright Marcus Thrane satirized their scandalous marriage in "Holden," which played to wide audiences in Chicago. Sauve will present a slideshow highlighting one of Goodhue County's most prominent citizens of the era and the widely publicized marriage-row.
The history center is also opening the 15th in its series of township exhibits that day with a free open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Holden Township history is revealed through photographs and artifacts.
