Spotlight Event
Casa Sin Dueño
Direct from Mexico City, Casa Sin Dueño will perform son jarocho, a robust and vibrant music tradition, at Crossings at 7 p.m. Sunday Feb. 10.
Casa Sin Dueño comprises Israel Vega, Cadence Nelson and friends. Born from African, Arabic, Spanish, and indigenous roots, son jarocho is recognizable by its driving 6/8 rhythm, call-and-response format of (often picaresque) verses and unique instrumentation - think jawbones of horses or donkeys.
While the most widely recognized son jarocho song in the United States is "La Bamba," as sung by Ritchie Valens, the style is enjoying resurgence and its instruments are finding their way into rock music.
While improvised verses called décimas typically are humorous and sometimes offensive, lyrics often speak of such human values as family, tolerance and respect for the natural world.
Son means sound in Spanish. Don jarocho's cultural influences reflect the diverse population that evolved in Veracruz, Mexico, from Spanish colonial times.
Tickets are $14 in advance, $16 day of show. Call 507-732-7616 or stop in to Crossings at 320 East Ave., Zumbrota. For more information, visit www.crossingsatcarnegie.com.
