School notes

Districtwide

Early release, no school

Students will be released early Friday Feb. 15 so that teachers can meet for professional collaboration. There is no school on Monday Feb. 18 or Monday Feb. 25.

Red Wing High School

Course offerings available online

The program of studies, a booklet that outlines course offerings, is available on the RWHS website at redwing.k12.mn.us.

Snow week

Snow Week will include a dance for eighth- and ninth-graders Friday Feb. 15 at the high school and a dance for grades 10-12 Saturday Feb. 16 at the St. James Hotel.

Twin Bluff Middle School

Spelling Bee

Jeffrey DeWolf won first place in the spelling bee. Abe DeJong came in second, and Jamie Casler came in third.

Spring pictures

Pictures will be taken the morning of Feb. 5. Pictures are on a prepaid basis and picture packets have been distributed to students.

Climb Theater

Climb Theater will give a presentation to all students Feb. 7.

Burnside

Music

Third-grade music classes attended the presentation “Mozart, the Boy Genius.” The OboeBass duo told about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s life in the 1700s and how his musical talent still shines today. The Red Wing Public School and Jones foundations funded the presentation.

Art

Fourth-graders are nearly finished shaping their storytellers out of clay. Third-graders are forming a paper sculpture inspired by the artist Jean Dubuffet. Second-graders have nearly completed their 3-D masks and will be bringing them home soon.

Sunnyside

Walking Wednesday

On Jan. 23, 17 students participated in the Sunnyside Sneaker program. The winner was Gavin Randazzo, from Ms. Feders’ first-grade.

Report cards

Report cards went home Monday Jan. 28. Please check your child’s backpack.

“Give Kids a Smile” day was Friday Feb. 1.

St. John's School

Math fair

The St. John’s math fair was this week. Students presented many projects.

Missions Around the World

Missions Around the World is Feb. 8. We will have guest speakers and sample some food. Come and join us for the day.

Colvill School

Colvill Kids Mixed Ages

Ms. Lila’s classes will learn about fish. They will read “Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister. Projects will include a window cling fish, pretend fishing and a watercolor fish.

Colvill Kids 3’s

Miss Katie’s classes will read “The Three Little Pigs” by Paul Galdone. They will work together to make houses out of straw, sticks and bricks and create a pig. Vocabulary words are “chimney, chin, three, wolf, straw, brick.”

Colvill Kids 4’s

Miss Catie’s classes are reading “Edward the Emu,” by Sheena Knowles. They will work on the letter Tt with Tiggy Tiger and continue to learn about animals and will create an emu.

Mary Ellen shared a scrapbook of her adoption from China. The children asked many questions.

Extended-day

The extended-day children have been enjoying a chapter book called “Tooga, a Story of a Polar Bear,” a realistic fiction account of a polar bear's first two years of life. They have learned about how a mother polar bear gives birth, hunts for food and cares for her cubs as well as how polar bears live on ice flows and pack ice with other animals such as arctic foxes and a variety of seals.

His Kids Preschool

Discovery Preschool

Penguins will finish out the winter wonderland theme. We learned habitat, family structure and that the Spanish word for penguin is "Pinguino. The Second Step lesson helped us learn to make friends and ask "Would you like to play?" and "Yes, please” or “No, thank you."

Kindergarten Readiness

Students continue to learn about winter and how animals hibernate, which animals migrate and which stay here. Children made polar bear, penguins and bear prints in the snow. The letter "Ee" was explored by bringing in items from home.

4-5 Kindergarten Readiness

Last week, Martin Luther King's dreams and hopes were talked about. The children shared what their drams for the future are and how everyone should be treated equally. A paper doll chain was made to show how we are all one class.

Under the Rainbow

Preschool 1 Room

Karmen's children practiced shapes and learned about Groundhog Day. Children talked about shadows, reviewed shapes, practiced colors and counting skills.

Mary Ann's Preschool 2

Mary Ann's class theme of the week was "Doctor, Doctor, Quick Quick, Quick." Books read throughout the week were "ABC Doctor,” “I Want To Be Doctor,” “My Friend The Doctor,” “Going To The Doctor” and “Corduroy Goes To The Doctor." They made Band-Aid art.

Laurie's Jumpstart Team

Pre-kindergartners had the theme “Fun With Shapes.” They sorted and identified many shapes all over their room. They also practiced yoga.

Adventures in Learning Preschool

New technology

Students are excited about the newest technology in the classroom: the iPad. Parents raised runds.

3-4-year-olds

The students continue to learn about winter by playing in the snow, reading non-fiction books and making a pinecone bird feeder. The students learned a new morning meeting greeting with the use of an indoor snowball (Styrofoam ball).

4-5-year-olds

The students acted out “The Gingerbread Man.” After reading four versions, the students discussed how they were similar and different. They brought home a stuffed gingerbread man they made and wrote a story about their gingerbread adventures.
