William Joseph "Bill" Gadient Sr. of Goodhue passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, Jan. 29, at the Seminary Home in Red Wing.
Bill was born on Oct. 23, 1934, in Red Wing, the son of David and Alfreda (Matter) Gadient. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Columbkill Catholic Church, where he continued his lifelong membership. He graduated in 1953 from Goodhue High School. He was married to Kathleen "Kay" LaPlante at St. Mary's Church in Chatfield on June 26, 1954. Shortly after, Bill established his own family farm near Goodhue, where he farmed his whole life.
Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Goodhue Lions Club, served on the Cemetery Board, and was an active member of the choir at St. Columbkill Church. Bill loved kids; he enjoyed taking them fishing, hunting, and teaching them how to farm. He always had a camera in his hand to catch all those special memories. He liked to snowmobile, dance, watch sports, play cards, and enjoyed putting a smile on other's faces. Bill will be remembered as a man with a big heart and strong faith who was never afraid to work hard. He has taught us many things, and the most important thing he showed us was the love he had for his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Kay; 11 children, Linda (Marty) O'Connor, Deb (Randy) Tutewohl, Diane (Chuck) Ryan, all of Goodhue, Kathy (Dave) Huneke of Zumbrota, Irene Gadient (Kevin Fosberg) of Red Wing, Bill Jr. (Brenda) of Goodhue, Tim (Roberta) of Zumbrota, Denise (Brad) Voth of Goodhue, Pat (Todd) Dicke of Red Wing, Mary (Mark) Erhardt of Goodhue, and Chris (Stacey) of Willmar; 38 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Fr. Peter Gadient, Regina Morelan, and Ray (Ruth) Gadient; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Len Lodermeier, Louis Ward, Agnes Gadient, Shirley Gadient, Neta Gadient, and Berdell Gadient; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son John; son-in-law Steve Ryan; grandchildren, Monica Gadient and Brendan Gadient; nine siblings, Margaret, Bernard, and John Gadient, Rosemary Lodermeier, Katherine Ward, Frances Lodermeier, Gerald, David Jr., and Robert Gadient.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at St. Columbkill Catholic Church in Belle Creek. Celebrants will be Father Bruce Peterson and Father Joseph LaPlante. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, and Thursday, Feb. 7, from 10-11 a.m., all at St. Columbkill Catholic Church.
