Wrestling: Cougars go 1-1 at Cannon Falls triangular

Zumbrota-Mazeppa finished 1-1 at the Cannon Falls/Randolph triangular on Thursday, defeating the host Bombers 42-21 before losing 36-18 to Kenyon-Wanamingo. Cannon Falls/Randolph finished 0-2, losing 34-30 to K-W.

Against the Bombers, the Cougars’ Joey Majerus got Z-M on the board at 113 pound with a 47-second pin over Wyatt Johnson. Cannon Falls/Randolph rattled off two straight decisions by Ryan Epps (120 pounds) and Tyler Wilson (126) before Z-M took the next three. Cody Heitman put the Cougars up 18-6 with a pinfall at 3 minutes, 12 seconds at 145 pounds. From there, Z-M won five of the next seven matches to secure the 42-21 victory.

Things would not go as well for the Cougars against K-W in a 36-18 loss. Statistics were unavailable for this match.

The Bombers looked to get on track early against K-W with a 15-6 lead after five matches. At 113 pounds, Epps came up with a pinfall at 2:42 over Bradley Kish. But the Knights climbed back in a hurry, winning the next three matches before Cannon Falls/Randolph’s Derek Johnson ended K-W’s run with a 7-3 decision at 160 pounds. At 195 pounds, the Bombers’ Justin Miest pinned Austin Jackson in 54 seconds, and after a forfeit at 220, Cannon Falls/Randolph held a 30-28 lead. In the final match, K-W clinched the dual as Nick Langer pinned Cooper Rohloff in 55 seconds.

Z-M back on the mat on Feb. 1 at Byron, while Cannon Falls/Randolph heads to Rochester Century today for a tournament.
