Wrestling: Wildcats 1-1 at Byron; Tigers winless

Against Goodhue, Lake City got off to a 9-0 start after a decision by Kevin McGinley at 106 pounds, and a pinfall victory for Carston Dammann at 113. But the Wildcats responded with 17 straight points, started off by a pinfall by Joel Gadient over Tyler Frank at 120 pounds. Shane Siewert broke the streak for the Tigers with a pinfall over Riley Huemann at 145 pounds, but Goodhue rattled off three straight pins by Mitchell Breuer (152 pounds), Jacob Blattner (160) and Charles Dahling (170) to put the dual out of reach for a 41-30 Wildcats victory.

Facing Byron in their next match, the Wildcats couldn’t slow down a 21-point streak, falling to the Bears 36-30. Gadient and Josh Dahling each tallied pinfalls for Goodhue, while Kyle Drehmel took a technical fall at 132 pounds.

Lake City didn’t fare any better against Byron, falling 45-21. McGinley and Dammann gave Lake City an early 8-0 edge. At 126 pounds, Andrew Schmidt tallied a 16-3 major decision, and Siewert picked up an 8-6 decision at 145 pounds. From there, the Bears won six straight matches, including four by pinfall to put the match away. At 285, Andrew Denzer added six more points for the Tigers with a pinfall victory.

Both Goodhue and Lake City are in action today. The Wildcats head to Robbinsdale Cooper, while the Tigers host a 10-team tournament.
