Cannon Falls erased a 7-point deficit in the final minutes of Tuesday’s Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division game against Zumbrota-Mazeppa and came away with a 56-55 victory in Cannon Falls.
The Cougars had the ball with eight seconds to go but were unable to score as the Bombers pulled down the defensive rebounds to secure the win, Cannon Falls head coach Josh Davisson said.
“Early in the season, we probably lose this game but defensively we made some stops,” he said. “No fault to Zumbrota, just defensively we dug our heels in finally and we hit a few shots.”
Jordan Lundell had 19 points and four assists to lead the Bombers (9-7, 6-1 HVL Blue) and Brock Peterson added 18 points. Paul Rolfes had five assists and four steals as Cannon Falls pulled even with Lake City in the conference standings.
Z-M (8-6, 4-2 HVL Blue) was led by Kevin Niebuhr with 25 points, including five 3-pointers, and Lucas Ziemba finished with 19 points and was 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
“Niebuhr went off on us,” Davisson said. “(Ziemba) can drive and get to the basket. He put a lot of pressure on our interior defense and our guards attacking like that.”
The Cougars play Triton Thursday in Dodge Center and the Bombers will face Pine Island Friday on the road.
