The Cannon Falls girls basketball team looked prime for its first win of the season Tuesday against Triton. But poor free-throw shooting kept the Bombers away from victory in a 58-55 Hiawatha Valley League Blue division loss in Cannon Falls.
“We missed a bunch of close bunnies and couldn’t hit free throws at the end of the game,” said Cannon Falls head coach Eric Mace. “Losing by three, games like that tend to sting.”
Looking for their first win since Feb. 3, 2012, the Bombers (0-15, 0-5 HVL Blue) shot just 2 of 8 from the charity stripe in the final four minutes. In the game, Cannon Falls went 23-for-36 from the free-throw line.
Freshman Grace Rutter paced the Bombers with 13 points, while Courtney Woodcock and Maggie Rutter had 10 points in the loss. Tayler Banitt added five assists, and Katie Noble came down with seven rebounds.
“They played us as well as they’ve played all season, and we played as well as we have all season,” Mace said.
The Cobras (3-11, 1-4 HVL Blue) were led by Haley Staffon, who dropped a game-high 22 points.
On Friday, Cannon Falls continues HVL Blue play at Lake City.
