Trailing 24-13 in the first half, Zumbrota-Mazeppa was unable to recover, falling 53-29 road loss to No. 6-ranked (2A) Byron on Tuesday.
The Cougars’ offense struggled to get in sync, shooting 12 of 41 from the field, including 2 of 11 from 3-point range. Z-M shot just three free throws in the loss.
Leading the Cougars on offense was Lucas Ziemba, who finished with nine points. Kurt Gadient followed with five, while Kevin Niebuhr added four points and seven rebounds.
Z-M (7-5, 3-1 HVL Blue) returns to conference play Thursday, hosting Pine Island.
