Wrestling: Goodhue goes 5-0 at Mauston

The Goodhue wrestling team went a perfect 5-0 at the Mauston (Wis.) invitational on Saturday, with victories over New Lisbon, Mauston, West Salem/Bangor, Holmen and Black River Falls.

The Goodhue wrestling team went a perfect 5-0 at the Mauston (Wis.) invitational on Saturday, with victories over New Lisbon, Mauston, West Salem/Bangor, Holmen and Black River Falls.

Thanks to four forfeits, and consecutive wins by Matthew Lexvold, Kyle Drehmel and Logan Breuer, the Wildcats scored the final 38 points of the match against New Lisbon on the way to a 50-24 win.

In its next match against Mauston, Goodhue’s lightweights and heavyweights paved the way for a 37-34 victory. Ryan Tipcke (220 pounds) and Josh Dahling (285) each tallied pinfall victories for the Wildcats, while Bailee O’Reilly won a 6-1 decision at 106 pounds, ending a 15-point swing for the Wildcats.

Against West Salem/Bangor, the Wildcats jumped out to a 21-6 lead, thanks to pinfall victories from Drehmel, Logan Breuer and Matthew Deneen, and a 10-4 decision by Mitchell Breuer. West Salem/Bangor won the next four matches to go up 30-21, but consecutive pinfalls by Dahling, O’Reilly, Edward Otterness and Jole Gadient put the match firmly in Goodhue’s control for a 45-36 victory.

Trailing 10-5 against Holmen, Riley Huemann put the Wildcats in the lead with a pinfall over Chris Jessen in 22 seconds at 145. With two forfeits by Holmen after Huemann’s win, Goodhue took a 24-10 lead and never looked back on the way to a 51-22 team victory.

In their final match Saturday against Black River Falls, the Wildcats’ Mason Huemann started the meet with a pinfall over Jon Stahl at 120 pounds. After Black River Falls tied the match, Drehmel won via pinfall at 132 pounds, and Logan Breuer secured a 4-3 decision at 138 pounds. Goodhue never trailed the rest of the match on the way to a 48-24 win.

Goodhue returns home on Thursday, hosting Triton in a Hiawatha Valley League dual.
