Northfield native and Red Wing Shoe Co. employee Nichole Porath will attempt a world record Sunday at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

Porath, a financial analyst at the Shoe, will be running an indoor marathon at the St. Olaf indoor track, trying to best the current women’s world record time of 3 hours, 8 minutes, 53.8 seconds.

“It would be cool to do it in my hometown and be cheered on by people from Northfield,” Porath said. “Not every day you find (a world record) in your hometown that’s very attainable to get. I guess I’m very lucky in that aspect.”

She competed in the marathon at the 2012 Olympic Trials in Houston, Texas, and finished in 2:44:12. She is training to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Trials.

With her current training regimen, this race isn’t her most important in the next year, but the record is certainly within reach, she said.
