Author visit

Author Jacqueline West will speak to fifth-graders Jan. 8.

Geography Bee

The School Geography Bee will start at 12:15 p.m. Jan. 10 in the IMC.

Early release day

Students will be dismissed at 12:25 p.m. Jan. 11.

Sunnyside School

Walking Wednesday

On Jan. 2, 20 students participated in the Sunnyside Sneaker program. The winner was Gavin Magill, from Mrs. Prahl’s kindergarten class.

Arts Alive

Mentor sessions are scheduled for after school Monday Jan. 7 and Tuesday Jan. 8. Look for your child’s time and location information that have been sent home in backpacks.

Visual arts

The students’ visual arts displays will be at Burnside and Sunnyside schools Jan. 7 through Feb. 7.

Early release day

Students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 11.

St. John’s School

St. John’s Tigers

St. John’s Tigers had their first game last week against Christ Zumbrota.

Staff change

Mrs. Melinda Anderson will be filling in for Mrs. Mueller, who is on leave.

Parent transport

Friday Jan. 11 will be a parent transport day; there will be no afternoon buses.

Math fair projects

Students should be working on their math fair projects and Accelerated Reader Points.

End of quarter

The quarter ends Jan. 18.

Colvill Family Center

Colvill Kids Mixed Ages

Ms. Lila’s classes are learning about snowmen this week. They will read “Snowmen At Night” by Caralyn Buehner. During the week, they will be tracing lines with marshmallows and practicing staying in the lines while painting a snowman.

Colvill Kids 3’s

Miss Katie’s classes are reading “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?” by Bill Martin Jr. They will make polar bears and will play an animal sound listening game.

Colvill Kids 4’s

Miss Catie’s classes are reading “The Mitten” by Jan Brett. They are learning the letter “Mm” with Mimi Mouse. They are sewing mittens, so we can retell the story. On Thursday or Friday, they will celebrate the color white.

Registration

Registration for 2013/2014 Colvill Kids Preschool is Jan. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. Please stop at Colvill Family Center to register your child.

ECFE

The winter/spring session of early childhood family education will begin the week of Jan. 7. Please contact Colvill Family Center at 651-385-8000 to register for open classes.

Red Cottage Montessori

Birthday book

Red Cottage children made a “Wish Book” for this week’s birthday children. Each child in the class is given the opportunity to add a “wish” to the book. This is fun because over time, the children learn to think about each birthday child and what he/she would actually enjoy. It’s a beautiful way to teach thoughtfulness.

Winter break

Red Cottage children are so happy to be back at school. They had a peaceful week rediscovering old favorites and new materials.

Classroom activities

The cool weather keeps our outdoor explorations short. Red Cottage children think about how the animals of the woods are staying warm. They scattered our homemade bird food in the woods this week that they have been making from old bread croutons with a mortar and pestle.

His Kids Preschool

Sandy’s 4- 5 Kindergarten Readiness class

Winter is in full swing and many snowman and snowflake projects are popping up. Children used corporation skills while graphing big, bigger and biggest snowmen. Children did a science project by collecting snow, marking how much they thought it would melt down to and guessing if the resulting water would be more or less than what they marked. What a surprise when they saw how dirty the snow was. The children shared the song “If all of the Snowflakes were Hershey bars and milk shakes” with other classrooms.

3-4 Discovery Preschool

The children rang in the new year by making a winter wonderland with snowflake and glitter projects and creating a shaving cream winter scene. The story “Snow” by Cynthia Rylant was shared. Children teamed up with a friend to make snow people from popcorn balls and cookie decorations. Second Step focused on learning ways to deal with waiting, such as being calm and engaging in quiet activities that do not disturb others, like counting out loud.

Red Wing High School

End of semester

The end of the first semester is Friday Jan. 18. Final exams will be given on Thursday Jan. 17 and Friday Jan. 18.

Geography bee

Eight eighth-graders will participate in the school geography bee Tuesday Jan. 8. The students gained this opportunity by earning the highest scores in the first round exam taken by all eighth-grade students. One winner will emerge from the eight finalists. The winner will take a written exam that will be submitted to the State Geography Bee.

Under the Rainbow

Preschool 1 classroom

Children were learning about the new year. They enjoyed making their noise makers, confetti art and doing some finger painting. They made snow angels out in the snow, and practiced the color brown, the shape hexagon, letter I and the number 9.

Preschool 2

Children read “Hello New Year,” and “Millions of Snowflakes.” For their dramatic play time they enjoyed having a New Year’s Eve party. They also are learning about many new things for the new year such as getting to know the color yellow, the shape star, the number 10 and the letter Y.

Jumpstart Team

“Welcome Winter” was the theme last week. The children learned what happens during the winter and were asked what they would do if they caught a snowflake. They made a winter collage and played with snow play dough. For their art creation, they made beautiful snowflakes out of craft sticks.

Holiday season

The children had a lot of fun this holiday season with all of the fun activities that went on. We can’t wait to see what 2013 will bring, and we hope everyone had a safe and Happy New Year.
