Horace Samuel "Shorty" Logan, 89, of Red Wing, died Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing.
Horace Samuel "Shorty" Logan, 89, of Red Wing, died Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing.
He was born July 7, 1923, in a log home in Sprague, Manitoba, Canada, the son of Joseph and Hannah Mae (McCauley) Logan. After his mother died, he was raised on a farm near Litchfield, Minn., by Charles and Agnes Nystrom, with their daughter, Clarice. He was a graduate of Litchfield High School in 1942. He served in the U. S. Air Force from March 1943 to April 1946. He then obtained an education in meat cutting in Cokato, Minn. He married Mildred Marie Carlson on Oct. 20, 1956, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Red Wing. He worked as a meat cutter at various grocery stores including Nelson's Super Valu, then worked at Corner Grocery from 1968 to 1985 when he retired to take care of Mildred. She died Dec. 9, 1997.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed coin collecting and studying family history and genealogy.
Survivors include one sister-in-law, Edith Flanders of Western Springs, Ill.; one brother-in-law, Anthony Reiner of St. Louis, Mo.; three nieces, one nephew, and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred; one sister, Kathleen Reiner; one brother, Melvin Flanders; and dear friend, Clarice (Nystrom) Anderson.
Memorials are preferred to Alzheimer's Association, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, or the American Cancer Society.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with Reverend Jack Nordgaard officiating. Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
