Girls Hockey: Wingers secure title

Second-ranked (1A) Red Wing keeps rolling along, racking up three more victories over the weekend in winning the All-Star Sports Holiday Classic at New Hope Ice Arena.

Second-ranked (1A) Red Wing keeps rolling along, racking up three more victories over the weekend in winning the All-Star Sports Holiday Classic at New Hope Ice Arena.

The Wingers defeated Champlin Park 4-1 Saturday to secure the title. They won 6-1 against Rogers Thursday and 3-2 over 16th-ranked (2A) Armstrong/Cooper Friday night.

Three players had three points each to lead Red Wing (16-1, 3-0 Missota) Saturday against Champlin Park. Reagan Haley had two goals and an assist, Nicole Schammel finished with two goals and one assist and Emily Stegora notched three assists. Paige Haley tallied one assist.

Courtney Potter scored Champlin Park’s lone goal on the power play in the second period.

The Wingers took a 1-0 lead at 9 minutes, 57 seconds of the first period on a goal by Reagan Haley.

Emily Stegora got the assist.

Champlin Park tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period before Reagan Haley followed with another goal to give Red Wing the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

In the third period, Schammel slipped two goals past Champlin Park’s goaltender Maddy Foss for the victory.

The Wingers will travel to face 17th-ranked (1A) Northfield Thursday.
