Red Wing’s Fairview Boulevard officially became Hewitt Boulevard yesterday. City crews will change street signs this week.
The Red Wing City Council approved the name change in August after Mayo Clinic Health System asked for a more neutral name following its acquisition of Fairview Medical Center.
The council selected Hewitt Boulevard to honor Charles Hewitt, a Red Wing physician who became Minnesota’s first commissioner of health.
Once the decision was announced, it was discovered that Hewitt also had a connection to Dr. Charles Mayo and Dr. Will Mayo and had donated his medical library to the Mayo Clinic in the early 1900s.
While the name change officially took effect Tuesday, the Post Office will continue to deliver mail addressed to Fairview Boulevard for the foreseeable future.
