Thanks to a stout defense, the No. 5-ranked (3A) Red Wing girls basketball team held off a late charge to beat Kasson-Mantorville 53-52 in the first round of the Warrior Club Holiday Basketball Tournament Friday at Winona State University.

Tesha Buck, who finished with a game-high 34 points, hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left in the game to help clinch the game for the Wingers, who shot just 26 percent from the field. Twenty-three of Buck’s 34 came in the second half.

The Wingers never trailed in the game.

Macy Kelly added 12 points for Red Wing, which will face Winona today in the tournament championship. The Winhawks toppled Tartan 84-66, setting a school record for points in a game. The two teams played in the Wingers’ season opener, with Red Wing pulling away with a 78-56 victory.
