Boys Basketball: Tigers win opening HVL Blue match-up

Josh Atkinson and Mitch Kuchinka each scored 12 points for Lake City Tuesday as the Tigers defeated Pine Island 58-43 at home.

Atkinson also provided six rebounds in the victory. Reid Lundell had 11 points and six rebounds, while Brady Kuchinka finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Ben Schramski tallied nine points.

Pine Island (1-4, 0-1 HVL Blue) was led by Colton Sinning with a game-high 15 points.

The Tigers (6-1, 1-0 HVL Blue) fell behind 14-4 quickly in the first half as the Panthers made their first four 3-pointers. But Lake City recovered with a 12-0 run during a 2 minute, 8 second stretch of the first half. The Tigers never trailed the rest of the way.

Lake City sealed the victory by shooting 20 of 27 from the free-throw line and forcing Pine Island into 18 turnovers.

After hitting their first four 3’s, the Panthers finished just 4-for-22 from behind the 3-point line.

The Tigers will host Cannon Falls Friday.
