Wrestling: Cougars finish 1-1 at Coon Rapids

Wrestling in the Coon Rapids Cardinal Invitational, the 10th-ranked (1A) Zumbrota-Mazeppa wrestling team went 1-1 on Saturday.

Facing St. Michael-Albertville, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A, in the first round, the Cougars managed just one win in a 53-3 loss. Getting the lone win for Z-M was Chase Steffen, who picked up an 8-2 decision over the Knights’ Thor Holstad at 160 pounds.

In the consolation bracket, the Cougars fared better, defeating Mounds View 40-26. Falling behind 6-0, Freedom Hunt put Z-M on the board at 120 pounds with a 9-3 decision against the Mustangs’ Sam McGinnity.

After Mounds View got a win at 126 pounds to go up 12-3, the Cougars won the next seven matches, including pinfalls by Mitchell Watkins (138 pounds), Cody Heitman (152), Hunter Prodzinski (160) and Andy Siems (182) to jump ahead 40-12.

Z-M returns home Friday, hosting a triangular with Dover-Eyota and Windom/Mountain Lake. Windom/Mountain Lake – then Windom/Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin – qualified for state last year in the Class 2A tournament.
