Cannon Falls had a lead at halftime but it slipped away against Maple River Friday in the first round of the Maple River Hardwood Classic. The Bombers held a 36-27 halftime lead but lost 65-55 to the Eagles.
“We played a lot better than we did our first game out,” Cannon Falls head coach Josh Davisson said. “We just struggled a little bit in the second half. I don’t think we played poorly, but shots that fell in the first half weren’t falling.”
Cannon Falls junior Brock Peterson had a game-high 18 points, and junior Jordan Lundell contributed 11 points. Senior Noah Callister had eight points in the loss.
Maple River (1-0) finished with seven players scoring seven or more points.
Ben Larson led the Eagles with 12 points, Jaron Denn had 10 points and Zach Krengel tallied 10 points.
“It was tough to hang with them, they’re pretty balanced,” Davisson said. “At some point, I think we could be there.”
The Bombers play Hayfield today at 5:15 p.m. in their second game of the invitational.
