Inspired by the ancient, Romanian tradition of “colindatori” or Christmas carolers, the Mila Vocal Ensemble presents a holiday concert that will take audiences on a tour of Eastern European holiday sounds at Crossings at 7:30 p.m. Friday Dec. 14.
The group of 10 female singers entertains with a broad selection of music originating from the cultures of Eastern Europe. Music lovers will be treated by bracing sounds of Croatia, surprised by the raw energy and dissonant harmonies of Bulgaria and charmed by joyful Ukrainian carols, promoter said. People also will hear tidbits from Romania, Russia, Belarus, Georgia and Serbia.
Mila is a professional women’s vocal ensemble committed to the authentic reproduction of more than a dozen distinct vocal styles. The ensemble owes its accuracy to passionate research and rigorous training with native speakers and performers. The ensemble typically performs a cappella.
The women have performed to international acclaim. The ensemble counts three performances on radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion” among its appearances.
“Mila sings chords that Lutherans do not have in them. You would have had to stay out of church for a long time to be able to learn this music,” said Garrison Keillor of Prairie Home.
The name “Mila” has connotations including “dear one,” “love” and “celebration” — in many of the languages represented by its repertoire. It is also a common women’s name in many Eastern European countries.
Mila performers include Jen Blecha, Nikki Gunther, Kristi Larson, Laura Lentz, Kerri Meyer, Abby Morrisette, Marie Rule, Jackie Smith, Phala Tracy and Carol Wahl.
