Girls Hockey: Red Wing blanks St. Croix ValleySecond-ranked Wingers get first shutout of the season in 6-0 victory Tuesday

Ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, the Red Wing girls hockey team cruised to a 6-0 victory at home Tuesday in a border battle against St. Croix Valley (Wis.) at Prairie Island Arena.
Out-shooting the Fusion 23-6 in the first period, the Wingers sprang out to a 4-0 lead, starting with a goal by Nicole Schammel 5 minutes, 36 seconds into the game. Less than five minutes later, linemate Emily Stegora found the back of the net for the 2-0 advantage.
Defenseman Paige Haley popped in a goal at 10:33, and Schammel closed out the first on a goal with just 32 seconds left until the first intermission.
Schammel, the state’s leading scorer, finished the game with five points (2 goals, 3 assists), while Reagan Haley and Stegora each finished with two assists.
Midway through the second period, Maddy Hardyman got in on the scoring act, beating St. Croix Valley goaltender Carlie Christensen for a power-play goal. At 15:15 of the second period, Taylor Heise scored Red Wing’s final goal of the game off a pass from Katelyn Hadler.
The Wingers outshot the Fusion 52-21.
In a year of firsts for Red Wing, sophomore goalie Ashley Corcoran got her first shutout of the season, stopping 21 shots in the victory.
The Wingers open their Missota Conference schedule on Thursday, hosting Shakopee. The Sabers came into Thursday’s matchup with a 3-4-1 record, losing 3-2 to Hopkins on Tuesday.
