Coming off a Class 1A state tournament appearance last season, the Zumbrota-Mazeppa wrestling team got off to a fast start in the 2012-13 season, winning the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie Don Hall Invitational on Saturday.
The Cougars won the nine-team tournament with a score of 205, besting second-place Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran by 10 points.
Five Z-M wrestlers – Joey Majerus (113 pounds), Mitchell Watkins (138), Cody Heitman (145), Chase Steffen (160) and Dillion Downes (170) – took first place in their respective weight classes. Steffen dominated his bracket, winning all his matches by pinfall, including a 34-second victory over Prairie Valley’s Dillion Borchert in the championship match.
