Girls Hockey: Wingers go 2-0 at Buffalo

Red Wing remained undefeated over the weekend, narrowly defeating both North Wright County and Fort Frances, of Ontario, Canada, during a tournament at the Buffalo Civic Center.

The third-ranked (Class 1A) Wingers (6-0) tallied an overtime 5-4 victory against 19th-ranked (2A) North Wright County Friday night.

The Riverhawks got on the board in the opening period with a goal by Maddi Sjelin, but Red Wing responded with two unanswered goals. Maddy Hardyman scored on the power play with assists by Paige Haley and Nicole Schammel, while Emily Stegora gave the Wingers a 2-1 lead at 16 minutes, 9 seconds of the first period with the assists to Schammel and Reagan Haley.

North Wright County tied the game at 2-2 in the second period and went up 3-2 at 5:44 of the third period on a goal by Dani Sibley.

Schammel tied the game less than two minutes later on a power-play goal from Paige Haley and at 10:51 of the third period, Reagan Haley added another power-play goal for Red Wing. The Riverhawks responded with Sibley’s second goal of the period to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Stegora secured the game-winning goal at 4:44 on an assist from Schammel.

Schammel finished with a goal and three assists to lead the Wingers. Ashley Corcoran made 36 saves to get the victory as Red Wing was outshot 40-22.

Facing Fort Frances, the Wingers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Schammel, Paige Haley and a power-play goal by Stegora all in the first period.

But Fort Frances responded with a three-goal period of its own in the second, tallying two power-play goals and a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 3-3. Stegora scored again at the end of the second period to take the lead back for Red Wing.

Stegora netted her third goal of the night at 4:29 of the third period to seal the Wingers’ 5-3 victory. Stegora finished with three goals and one assist against Fort Frances and scored both game-winning goals in the tournament.

Schammel had two goals and five assists during the tournament to up her team-leading points total to 25 in six games. Paige Haley contributed a goal and four assists in the two games, adding to her team-high 17 assists this season.

Red Wing faced Totino-Grace Tuesday at the Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis. Results were not available at press time.
