Red Wing Singers prepare for concert

The Red Wing Singers plan to shine as members present their annual free Christmas Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday Dec. 2 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

The Red Wing Singers plan to shine as members present their annual free Christmas Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday Dec. 2 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

The Red Wing Singers is a 32-member mixed choir. The group performs two concerts each year – one at Christmas and one in the spring at the Sheldon Theatre.

Cheryl Borgen is the director and Lynn Dulak the accompanist.

The concert narration is written this year by acclaimed children's author Jacqueline West, who is a soprano in the group.

"A Bright Star Shineth" is the theme. The music a mix of traditional carols such as "What Sweeter Music" by John Rutter, "Climb to the Top of the Highest Mountain" by Carolyn Jennings and "Durme, durme," a melody.

"In the Bleak Midwinter" features soprano soloist Esther Gullixson, "I Wonder As I Wander" features tenor Jon Sneegas, "Silent Night" soprano Karen Schulenberg and lively spiritual "Children Go Where I Send Thee" features tenor Peter Dulak.

The group will perform two newer pieces by Minnesota composer Mathew Culloton, "In dulci jubilo" and "Angels We Have Heard on High.”

Violinist and choir member Jessica Penn will play holiday favorites during the intermission.
