Red Wing High School

Book drive

Red Wing High School Book Drive was a success. Even though it is over, the school will continue to take donations, which can be dropped off in the principal’s office at the high school.

FFA food drive

FFA is sponsoring a food drive to stock a food shelf that Red Wing High School will be setting up. Food items that are most needed include canned meats, canned fruits/vegetables, grains/pasta, cereals, and peanut butter.

PAC meeting

PAC meets at noon Tuesday Nov. 20 in room L100. Joe Jezierski, the sirector of teaching and learning, will be the guest presenter.

Early release

Students will be released at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 21.

Burnside School

Fourth grade

To kick off this month in reading, many classes are working on their questioning skills with great books like “Junkyard Wonders,” by Patricia Polacco.

Sunnyside School

Walking Wednesdays

On Nov. 14 there were 61 students who participated in the Sunnyside Sneaker program. Those students who participated were able to purchase a book at half price from the Scholastic Book Fair. The winners were Addison Hanlin, from Ms. Rak’s kindergarten, and Ryan Ellis, from Ms. Pearson’s first-grade.

Report cards

First-quarter report cards will go home with children Monday Nov. 19.

Early Release

Students will be released at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 21.

Earn easy money

The following programs raise several thousands of dollars annually for both elementary schools. The money helps to pay for classroom materials, field trips and in-school visits from authors, artists and the Science Museum.

Please save the following items and send them to Sunnyside or Burnside Elementary with your child.

• EconoFoods receipts: the school will receive a percentage of the total receipt amount.

• General Mills Box Tops: the school usually receives 5 cents or more per box top.

• Kwik Trip milk and juice cartons/bags: the school receives 5 cents per bag top, milk or juice cap. Please dry before sending to school.

• Target: 1 percent of purchases can be designated back to the school of your choice

• Printer cartridges: HP, Canon, Xerox, Lexmark, Compac (black only, no color).

Kids Junction

The children strung necklaces, alternating straw pieces and beads to make a colorful apparel accessory. In the big gym, students played “The Great Bank Robbery,” a fun game using cones, hula hoops and bean bags.

St. John's School

Christmas Service practice

Children's Christmas Service practice runs 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Sunday Nov. 18.

Little Blessings Preschool

Class will not be in session Tuesday Nov. 20. That is the day of the preschool parent/teacher conferences.

Kindergarten

Students talked about what animal they would be if they could and why. There were some very interesting answers. "E" is the letter we are on this week. These students have started the Accelerated Reader program.

Grades One and Two

Accelerated Reader goal achievers for first quarter in Alice Danell's first- and second-grade classroom celebrated with an ice cream party. The star achievers are Adam Dilks, Lydia Mason, Nina Augustine, Kaylee Roper, Isabella Goeman and Tamisha Swarthout.

Grades 3,4,5

Justin Hansen's students have completed their study of Minnesota and are now learning about the Revolutionary War and the people of that era. In English, students are working with helping and linking verbs.

Grades 6,7,8

Students in Principal Benjamin Bain's classroom wrote paragraphs to answer "How can we avoid falling into temptations when we are afraid?" They used a Bible passage or two to support their answers.

Colvill School

Colvill Kids Mixed Ages

Miss Lila’s classes will learn about turkeys and Thanksgiving this week. We will read “T’was The Night Before Thanksgiving” by Dav Pilkey. They will make colorful turkeys and a Thanksgiving card.

Colvill Kids 3’s

Miss Katie’s classes will continue reading “My Many Colored Days” by Dr. Seuss. They will create a class book on emotions and play an emotion matching game.

Colvill Kids 4’s

Miss Catie’s classes are having grandparent or special friend day this week. Grandparents or special friends can come to school the last 1.5 hours of class. We will have snack, listen to a story and do some special activities together.

No school

Colvill Kids will not have class from Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 21-Nov. 23. Early Childhood Family Education will not have class the week of Nov. 19.

Kindergarten Readiness

The class is talking about Thanksgiving this week. Children are expressing what they are thankful for and learning about pilgrims and Native American cultures.

The letter "Tt" was introduced through making a turkey truck and singing the turkey truck song. Children are working on writing skills that have to do with a Thanksgiving Day meal.

3-4 Discovery Preschool

Melody and Shari's 3-4 Discovery Preschool class continues to explore trains, plans and cars. The story "My truck is stuck" was read. They played with cars in the mud while children re-told the story.

Counting skills with match box cars was a hit as the children drove them around the table. Second Step teachings this week was about caring and helping. Children acted out ways to help a friend and how to care for another person.

Red Cottage Montessori

Outdoors

Children took advantage of the beautiful weather this week and took many walks in the woods and along Hay Creek. Some children discovered the parts of horses, frogs, turtles, birds and fish and were able to draw the animals and label the parts.

Indoor work

The children always ask to go back to the school and work on current projects. Others are busy reading.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has provided thoughtful discussion about the ideas of tradition, thankfulness and 'family. Children are discussing what the first Thanksgiving was truly like, which is very different than what most adults believe. They look forward to a week of thanks ahead.

Class will be released at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
