Two separate fires over the weekend destroyed a barn and damaged a garage, the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The first occurred just before noon Friday. Miesville Fire Department was dispatched to Mount Hill Road in Welch. Scott W. Johnson reported that he looked out the window and saw his barn engulfed. By the time the first deputy arrived, the barn had burned to the ground. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a vehicle battery that had been left charging.

The second fire occurred at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday. The Cannon Falls Fire Department was dispatched to Oxford Mill Road in Stanton Township. The interior of the garage, owned by Joel Thorland, had been filled with smoke and there was damage to the structure. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a heater.
